Course Information
Description Basic Counseling Skills: This course is designed to facilitate development of basic communication skills necessary to develop an effective helping relationship with clients. It includes the utilization of special skills to assist individuals, families, or groups in achieving objectives through exploration of a problem and it's ramifications; examination of alternative solutions; and decision making.
Prerequisites None
Learning Outcomes Students will Identify and demonstrate knowledge of the basics of counseling principles, theories and skills to include crisis management.
Demonstrate knowledge of the various models and theories of behavioral addictions and substance use disorders and other problems related to addiction
Core Objectives Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.
* Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.
* Teamwork: Students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal and consider different points of view
* Personal Responsibility: Students will demonstrate the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making.
Program Student Learning Outcomes Students will Identify and demonstrate knowledge of the basics of counseling principles, theories and skills to include crisis management.(PSLO 3)
Demonstrate knowledge of the various models and theories of behavioral addictions and substance use disorders and other problems related to addiction.(PSLO 4).

Course Policies
Instructor Policies It is expected that this class will contain information that at times will be of a personal nature to many students. It is also expected that all students will maintain the dignity and respect of any personal stories shared within the group. I will be available to any student who wishes to discuss private matters regarding material in class/ If you feel you need professional counseling services, the College has a counseling center available to students, or I can furnish a referral for you.
Attendance Policy Students are to log into the course daily to check emails and announcements.
Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students with more than three absences from the course will receive an academic penalty of 10 points off attendance final score for every unexcused missed class, after three unexcused absences.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.

  1. No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

  2. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission.
